Pick up a free soil moisture meter and water smarter

As warmer weather returns and irrigation systems begin running again, many residents start watering on a routine schedule. But your landscape may not always need it.

Coming soon: a new giveaway is on the way from April 19 through May 3. More to come! Roseville Utilities will soon be offering free soil moisture meters while supplies last at the Utility Exploration Center, 1501 Pleasant Grove Blvd., during normal business hours.

This simple tool can help take the guesswork out of watering just as the season ramps up.

Why a moisture meter matters

Grass and plants can appear dry during warm afternoons or windy days, even when the soil still holds moisture around the roots. Watering based on appearance alone can lead to overwatering.

A soil moisture meter removes the guesswork. By inserting the meter’s probes into the soil near your lawn or plants, you can quickly see whether the soil is dry, moist, or already has enough water.

Checking the soil before watering can help:

  • Avoid overwatering
  • Save water
  • Encourage deeper, healthier plant roots
  • Reduce runoff into streets and storm drains
It takes only a few seconds and helps ensure your landscape receives the water it actually needs.

Before turning on the sprinklers, take a moment to check the soil. A quick test can help you water smarter and keep your landscape healthy. Because when it comes to watering, the soil knows best.

Meters will be available to Roseville Utilities water customers while supplies last. For other water saving tips, visit Roseville.ca.us/savewater
