Let’s talk watering smart during the summer
Summer’s in full swing. Even with cooler temps this year (no complaints here!), your yard still needs water – just not as much as you might think.

Most of the water we use at home is used for outdoor watering, and a big chunk never reaches the plants. It evaporates or runs off before it can do any good.

You can have a beautiful yard that uses less water.

Whether you swap out sprinklers, plant low-water plants, or add a smart timer, we offer services to help you water smart. We also have rebates for turf replacement, reducing some of the cost for switching to landscapes to help reduce water usage.

"Small changes outside can lead to big water savings," said Bobby Alvarez, water conservation administrator. "Whether switching to better nozzles or adjusting your watering schedule, we’re here to help you make it work for your yard or landscape."

Simple changes, big results

  • Replace old sprinklers with rotary nozzles. They water more evenly and waste less.

  • Install a weather-based irrigation timer that adjusts watering based on actual conditions.

  • Add mulch around trees and plants to help keep moisture in the soil. It regulates soil temperature, suppresses weeds that compete for moisture, and improves soil structure, all contributing to a more water-efficient garden.

  • Consider replacing the lawn with landscaping that fits our climate. It can save a lot of water and still look great.

  • Trees don’t need daily watering but deep, slow soaks during the summer. A soaker hose around the edge of the canopy and a layer of mulch can make a big difference.
