Looking for the latest “dish” on the local restaurant scene? Check out the “Dinner and Drinks at Six” podcast with hosts Justin and Katrina Six.
The couple are serving up rave reviews as they explore venues in Placer County and the surrounding region.
The podcast started as a fun way to do date nights for two hard working parents and public servants. “Because we are both heavily involved in the community on the clock, we like to be patrons of the community off the clock,” said Justin.
On the clock, Justin serves and protects his community as a Roseville Police Officer. Katrina works out of the Roseville City Clerk’s Office, supporting all City departments as well as City Council, boards and commissions. Together, they are proud to contribute to making Roseville a safe and thriving community where they raise their family.
Off the clock, the husband-and-wife team apply their customer service expertise to the restaurant scene as they highlight some of the best privately-owned gems in town. “We look for places that could be a good date night spot – an intimate setting with good food and good atmosphere; something fun,” said Katrina.
What’s on the menu for date nights?
“I am a creature of habit,” said Justin. “I find what I like and stick to it. Red meat, potatoes, and a glass of red wine.” Katrina is a foodie at heart and likes to be adventurous. “I want to try something new that I’ve never had before…what is the most unique thing on the menu that I can order? I will try anything,” she said.
If you follow along on social, you’ll find mouth-watering photos of their favorite appetizers, entrees, and desserts as they share their latest reviews with a side of charm and romance. “We want to highlight the positive. No negative reviews. If we have a negative review, we just don’t share it. We want to promote business and help make them successful,” said Katrina.
Unique places they’ve tried include Omakase in Lincoln (Japanese Coastal fusion) and Around the Horn Brewery in Yosemite - Justin and Katrina recommend the Ahi Ahi bowl. They shared how the restaurant owner contracts with a pilot, Jim, to fly in fresh tuna twice a week from Monterey. “I’m not a fish person and I loved it,” shared Katrina.
An important part of the podcast is getting to know the restaurant owners. “The people behind it are the heart of the business. We want to find out their ‘why’ and what drove them to this,” they shared.
Many restaurants bring more than just food to the table in their community. Masa Masa in Roseville, for example, donates a portion of the proceeds back to a local charity with every taco you buy – it’s food for the soul.
“You get to know the business owners outside of an official capacity,” said Justin. “From the PD standpoint, when I’m going to see business owners it’s usually because they’re having a bad day.” Katrina added “And now we get to know them on their best day.”
They learn some pretty fun facts along the way too. Ever wonder how many cows Roundhouse Deli goes through in a week? You’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out.
The podcast is not only good for local businesses, it’s great for their marriage too. As many working parents know, it’s hard to find time for date nights. The podcast reinforces setting aside time for just the two of them. It’s a built-in date night twice a month; one day off together every two weeks for coffee and dinner. “It has really opened up our communication. This is something that we both love. We sit and talk and have a lot of fun,” they shared.
They record episodes in the comfort of their own home, using the dining table or relying on the acoustics of a small walk-in closet. “And the kids can’t find us in there,” Katrina laughs.
Both Justin and Katrina feel the podcast helps build a sense of community, connecting back to their heart for public service and hunger to support the community they love. “It allows us to give back differently,” said Justin. They enjoy supporting other people’s dreams like the single mom who opens a coffee shop. “If we can have a hand in helping these businesses be more successful and help get the word out, that’s the best thing we can do.”
