Week 1 - February 12

Green Gardener intro | River-friendly landscaping

Class description

This class kicks off an exploration to learn principles and practices to help you create, care for, and enjoy your fabulous California garden. Fleeting and avoidable are the days of mowing a lawn once a week, pruning shrubs into balls and squares, overusing fertilizers and pesticides, and sprinklers that gush potable water that runs into our stormdrain systems. The goal for Making Water Conservation a California Way of Life requires a fresh approach to our landscapes and their care. Fundamental River-friendly principles will be covered to set the stage for the upcoming classes that will dive deeper into these topics: Basics of how to work with nature to build and protect healthy, living soil; capture rainwater as a resource; select and care for California native and climate-appropriate plants; use practical strategies for efficient irrigation; manage pests without toxic chemicals; and support the health of our waterways.

Week 2 - February 19

Understanding soil health and your role as its caregiver

Class description

Soil is not just a dirty word or merely a planting medium for growing garden and landscape plants. Discover why soil is more important than you think. Secrets about how your soil functions, its impact on plant health, and the ways plants and the “living” soil collaborate to produce healthy, pest- and drought-resistant plants will be revealed. Soil management tools and techniques to utilize (and avoid) will be unearthed. This knowledge will enable you to grow a robust living soil as part of your own regenerative mini-ecosystem that will sprout into a thriving garden and landscape for the betterment of your family, our community, our watershed, and the planet.

It’s all much simpler than you think.
