Tips for a water-wise summer

Updated July 01, 2024
Now that we are officially in summer, the question is, how do you maintain your landscape in the summer heat? Here are some great tips for keeping a beautiful, water-wise landscape:

• Check before you water: Use a moisture meter or a hand shovel to dig into the soil before turning on the sprinklers. Ensure the soil is moist, at least three to four inches deep, to confirm that water is reaching the plant root zone.

• Use smart sprinkler timers: Install a WaterSense-labeled weather-based irrigation timer to adjust your watering schedule automatically. These controllers consider local weather conditions, soil type, sun exposure, and plant type to determine the water needs of your landscape, adjusting as conditions change.

• Try the Sacramento Region Smart Sprinkler Scheduler: Visit BeWaterSmart.info to use this tool, which allows you to enter information about your landscape (such as plant materials, soil type, and sun exposure) and receive a custom watering schedule based on weather and local guidelines.

• Let your grass grow: Let it grow taller to shade the soil, keeping it cool and reducing evaporation. Taller grass also develops a more extensive root system, enhancing drought tolerance.

• Water early: Water your plants early in the day to ensure the water soaks into the soil and minimizes evaporation. Always follow your water provider’s watering guidelines and recommendations.
