California bans watering nonfunctional turf on commercial properties
To continue managing drought conditions, the State of California adopted emergency drought rules in late May prohibiting watering turf used for decorative purposes (nonfunctional turf) at businesses and in common areas in subdivisions and homeowners associations. This ban does not apply to yards at homes.

Several exemptions include watering sports fields, areas where people gather, keeping trees healthy, and irrigating areas with recycled water.

The State of California intends to enforce this action through reports from the public through the State’s water waste reporting portal, savewater.ca.gov. Any prohibited activity is an infraction punishable by a fine of up to $500 each day the violation occurs.
