On 03/11/2022, Roseville Animal Control Supervisor John Bennett and Animal Control Officers (ACO) Sarah Severns and Gabe Sorenson were honored by the Placer County SPCA with their Hero Award at their 20th Annual Funny Bones Comedy Show and Awards Night.  The annual award is given by the Placer SPCA to “honor people, animals, businesses and/or organizations that have gone above and beyond to demonstrate how strong the human-animal bond is.”

This award speaks to the work that ACOs perform every day.  They make every effort to keep the public safe, protect animals, and educate the community to be responsible pet owners. ACOs primarily provide the following services:

•    Investigation and enforcement of state and local animal laws including animal welfare and crimes against animals, animal hoarding, dogs off leash, aggressive behavior involving animal bites to humans or other animals, and other various domestic animal related nuisances.
•    Assistance with lost or found animals
•    Assistance with sick, injured, and deceased domestic animals
•    Assistance with sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife

Roseville ACOs work collaboratively with multiple organizations and neighboring animal welfare agencies, and they also provide mutual aid to other organizations and agencies in need, especially during disasters where animals of all kinds need rescue.  Roseville ACOs most recently assisted at the Caldor Fire (El Dorado County) in 2021 and with the Glass Fire (Santa Rosa) in 2020.

ACOs are also available to speak at neighborhood and community events and schools to educate and inform children and adults about the ever-progressing field of animal welfare, explain the tools they use to keep the public and the animals safe, and the do’s and don’ts of various animal related scenarios.

It is clear that Roseville ACOs love their careers and have an appreciation for the partnership they continue to build with the neighborhoods and communities in Roseville.

Congratulations ACO Supervisor John Bennett, and ACOs Sarah Severns and Gabe Sorenson, and thank you for your service!
