Background

The municipal government of the City of Roseville is governed through a charter authorized by the California Constitution. The Charter is a vital document which establishes a degree of autonomy to local governments. The Charter addresses important aspects of Roseville's authority.

The original Charter of the City of Roseville was adopted by the voters on April 1, 1935 and certified by the California Secretary of State on May 2, 1935. Modifications to the original document have been approved by the voters on several occasions, with the last major amendment occurring during the 2010 General Election.

Although not required by state law, the City of Roseville has historically reviewed and amended the Charter every 10 years.
