Holiday Travel Home Security

Updated October 25, 2022
Planning on traveling this holiday season?

Besides taking the usual safety and security precautions, you can also apply for Roseville Police Department’s Vacation House Check Program.

The Vacation House Check Program is a free service offered by the police department for Roseville residents and is supplemental to your primary home security arrangements.

While you are away, volunteers with the Citizens On Patrol program will check your residence on a random basis looking for signs of suspicious activity such as open doors, open or broken windows, unfamiliar cars, or other questionable conditions.

Any situation discovered by our COP volunteers needing immediate attention will be addressed by Roseville Police Officers.

Enroll in Vacation House Check program here.  On the front page, hover your mouse pointer over “Community Services” then click on “Vacation House Check”.  Fill out the form completely and click the submit button at the bottom of the page.  Once processed, you will receive a confirmation e-mail.   You can also click HERE to go directly to the Vacation House Check web application.

Applications must be submitted at least seven days prior to your departure, and can last no longer than 30 days.
The Vacation House Check program is not intended to provide security service for your home.  The Roseville Police Department assumes no liability for any thefts, losses, or damage to properties during the enrollment period.

Other Home Security Tips for vacations:

  • Ask a trusted neighbor to watch the house and report anything suspicious to the police
  • Install timers on lights – or use smart plugs you can control remotely from your smart phone
  • Have someone mow the lawn and take the trash out
  • Stop your mail and/or newspaper delivery for the time you will be gone
  • Leave your blinds/curtains open if you normally do
  • Don’t advertise you will be gone on social media
  • Lock everything – doors, windows, garage door
  • Remove any “hide a key”
  • Remove any garage door remotes from vehicles and secure them
  • Use a cut-to-size wood 2x4 placed in the track of any sliding glass doors
  • Use cut-to-size wooden dowels in the tracks of sliding windows.
