3/17/23 12:00 AM |
Fraud |
7100 Kingbird Lane |
The victim received an email indicating that he was being charged $599.99 by McAfee Antivirus Security Systems. He then called the customer service number shown in the email. The suspect instructed the victim to input the refund amount on his computer. When the victim put in the number, additional zeros appeared at the end of the number. The suspect told the victim that the number was too high, and now the victim needed to buy gift cards to cover the cost, so that the suspect wouldn’t get fired. The victim purchased $4,000 worth of gift cards and then provided the gift card information to the suspect. CRIME TIP: Don't pay upfront for a promise. Someone might ask you to pay in advance for things like debt relief, credit and loan offers, mortgage assistance, or a job. They might even say you've won a prize, but first you have to pay taxes or fees. If you do, they will probably take the money and disappear. |
