Victim received a text message which asked him to confirm an Amazon purchase of a $2,500 television. Victim said the message told him to call the listed number if he did not make the purchase. He called the number to protest the purchase and a male answered and stated his name was "Adam". Victim said the suspect told him that his accounts had been hacked. Victim said the suspect was able to tell him the last four digits of his credit card and a few of his most recent Amazon purchases as a conformation that he in fact worked for Amazon employee. Victim said the suspect told him that in order to reimburse his account for the debt, he was required to purchase $1,000 in Target gift cards and provide the gift card number. Victim complied with the suspect’s request. When he provided the suspect with the card number, the suspect would explain there was a computer system issue and order victim to purchase more cards. By the time the victim determined he was being scammed, he had purchased $9,000 worth of Target and Best Buy gift cards. CRIME TIP: Talk to someone. Before you give up your money or personal information, talk to someone you trust. Con artists want you to make decisions in a hurry. They might even threaten you. Slow down, check out the story, do an online search, consult an expert - or just tell a friend. |
