Cost Considerations

Before purchasing a photovoltaic (PV) system consider simple low-cost options to save energy.  Roseville Electric Utility’s energy saving page, or our Ways to Save guide, can help you lower your energy bill with simple low-cost options.  Let’s continue our discussion of PV systems.

Your first question is probably “How much does a solar system cost?”  Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer.  The cost of a PV system varies significantly depending on your energy usage, the size of your home, local regulations, how large of a PV system you want, and optional features like battery storage.  The Center for Sustainable Energy estimates PV systems cost roughly $15,000 to $25,000, while the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates a median PV system in California costs $21,000.  Again, remember that PV system prices vary greatly depending on equipment selection.

Another consideration for PV systems are tax credits.  The Inflation Reduction Act extended the federal government tax credit for solar systems through 2032.  Talk to a tax professional to determine if you qualify.

Ultimately, the decision to purchase a PV system is up to you, take your time to consider all of your options.  Now that we have a rough idea of the cost, let’s discuss the financial benefit of a PV system.
