What's in the backpack? A wallet full of cash and credit cards? An expensive laptop? An iPad? Or grungy gym clothes and candy wrappers?
A thief will break your car window to find out. Often they're richly rewarded for their efforts. That's why we urge you not to leave backpacks, purses, briefcases, duffel bags or any other kind of mysterious bags in the passenger compartment of your vehicle.
Take your valuables with you. If you must leave items in your car, stash them completely out of sight, preferably in the trunk, before you get to your destination. If you wait until you park before you hide your things, a thief might already be in the area, watching you and waiting for you to leave.
Keep your vehicle empty and boring, without any mysteries for a thief to solve.
