Is working out one of your New Year goals? It’s fairly common for thieves to steal items out of cars parked at fitness centers and trail-heads (vehicle thefts like this one are less common). Thieves know the owners are going to be away from their cars for a while, and that they’re more likely to leave their wallets, purses and other valuables in the car, as happened in this case. If you’re going to work out, use a locked locker in fitness facilities, or take your valuables with you in a workout bag. If you’re using the trail, take your valuables with you—try to leave the big bulky purse, laptop and other valuables at home, and just take your driver’s license, keys and phone along while you walk, run or cycle. If you must leave valuables in the car, hide them in the trunk or covered cargo ahead before you get to your destination. If you wait until you’re in the lot to “hide” your purse, a thief might already be in the area watching you.
