Firefighters Respond to Small Explosion and Smoke
Contact :Rob Baquera, Community Relations Analyst, Fire    916-774-5808

Just after midnight on Sunday, May 3rd , the Roseville Fire Department responded to a report of a small explosion and smoke from a structure on the 500 block of E Street. Crews quickly discovered a fire pit in the rear of the home with an older tube-television burning inside causing the smoke and booming noise.  Fire crews quickly contained the fire and the hazard of the television. The crews determined that the television was an older CRT TV with a vacuum tube that could potentially release toxic gases when exposed to fire. Because of the quick actions of Firefighters on-scene, the hazardous release of toxic gases was contained and the risk to the surrounding neighborhood abated.

Although it’s not illegal to have a residential fire pit, the Roseville Fire Department encourages residents to only burn clean dry wood and a small amount of starter materials; such as hay or kindling. Flammable liquids, combustible materials, electronic, or household hazardous waste should not be used with a fire pit.

Residents needing to dispose of electronic waste or other household hazardous waste can call the Roseville Environmental Utilities Department.  They offer a free doorstep pick-up service for Roseville residents for a wide array of electronic waste and other household hazardous waste items. To set up a pick-up at your doorstep by appointment, call (916) 774-5780.  Visit this website ( for more information about proper disposal of household hazardous and electronic waste.
