Profile

The City of Roseville Alternative Transportation Division of Public Works is responsible for providing public transit service within Roseville. The City owns and maintains the bus fleet and contracts with a transit provider for the operation of Roseville Transit. Roseville Transit operates three separate transit systems: Local, Commuter, and Dial-A-Ride with more than 433,000 passenger trips a year.

Community Meetings
The Roseville Alternative Transportation Division wants to help you learn how to use Roseville Transit, bikeways or carpooling. We will meet with community groups about how easy it is to use to alternative transportation to travel for work, fun, errands, or medical appointments. Transit Ambassador Program
Do you need help planning a trip on public transit? Call a Transit Ambassador! Volunteers with the Transit Ambassador Program of South Placer County are available to help you learn how to use your local transit system. Transit Ambassadors are screened and trained volunteers who enjoy contributing to their community by helping others become comfortable using area public transit. Learn more about the Transit Ambassador Program.

Transportation Commission
The Transportation Commission reviews and makes recommendations to the City Council related to the community’s transportation needs. The Commission deals with issues related to four primary areas: public transit; traffic circulation; bikeways and pedestrian facilities; and transportation systems management. It is also a forum to provide public input for issues related to transportation. The five-member commission is appointed by the City Council. Each commissioner is appointed to a four-year term and may serve for two full terms.

Roseville Transit History

  • 1970: First "fixed route" service in Roseville operated by Mountain Transportation Cooperative (MTC).
  • 1971: Fixed route service evolves into a "demand responsive" service.
  • 1973:
    • MTC loses federal funding and shuts down
    • The City of Roseville contracts with Sacramento Regional Transit for commuter and fixed route service.
  • 1978: The City of Roseville contracts with CTS to provide demand responsive service.
  • 1985: The City of Roseville begins operation of fixed route service under contract with DAVE Transportation Service.
  • 1987:
    • Competitive bid process for commuter service is awared to Greyhound
    • Fixed routes are redesigned to 30 minute headways.
  • 1989: Competitve bid process for commuter service follows after Greyhound strike. The contract is awarded to DAVE Transportation Service.
  • 1990:
    • DAVE Transportation Service takes over CTS; all three transit services are now operated by DAVE Transportation Service
    • 5 Neoplan pre-owned buses are purchased and retrofitted with wheelchair lifts for commuter service.
  • 1995: Roseville Transit fixed route and commuter service are reconfigured and streamlined to increase cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
  • 1997: Laidlaw Transit Services, Inc. buys DAVE Transportation Service and takes over transit contract with the City of Roseville.
  • 1998:
    • 4 Dial-A-Ride buses are purchased with Federal Transportation Association (FTA) grant funds
    • The American Lung Association recogizes Roseville Transit as a 1998 Clean Air Hero.
  • 1999:
    • Saturday fixed route bus service is added through a FTA 3037 JARC grant.
    • Bike racks are added to all fixed route and commuter buses.
  • 2000:
    • The 1997 contract with Laidlaw Transit is extended for 1 year
    • A Short Range Transit Plan (SRTP) is adopted that calls for fare restructuring, new fixed route and commuter routes and 30-minute headways to be implemented over the next 2 years
    • Route R is added, fare for all three services is restructed, Route A and B are realigned to approve effectiveness and travel to the new regional mall, and a 5th commuter route is added
    • 5 new commuter buses are delivered to replace older vehicles.
  • 2001:
    • The City of Roseville contracts with MV Transportation to operate transit service.
    • 6th commuter route is added.
  • 2004: The City of Roseville extends contract with MV Transportation.
  • 2005: The City of Roseville partners with the Placer County Transportation Planning Agency (PCTPA) to update the Short Range Transit Plan.
  • 2006:
    • The City of Roseville extends contract with MV Transportation.
    • The Roseville Transit News subscription email service is created to communicate with passengers in a timely manner.
  • 2007:
    • The City of Roseville extends contract with MV Transportation.
    • Transit fare structure is reconfigured.
    • Route K is split into two routes creating Route L, Dial-A-Ride service is expanded to cover more holidays, the Discount Photo ID Card is implemented for the first time.
    • The Transit Ambassador program is launched in south Placer, with trained volunteers providing friendly assistance to new or inexperienced riders seeking to learn how to use local routes.
  • 2008:
    • 6 replacement Dial-A-Ride vehicles, 1 expansion Dial-A-Ride vehicle, and 2 expansion Local service vehicles will arrive to expand service.
    • Google Transit trip planning added to the website.
  • 2009:
    • Roseville Transit unveils a new design scheme for bus exteriors.
    • On June 17, 2009 the City awarded a five year transit service contract to MV Transportation, which included an option to extend the contract for three years. 
  • 2011:
    • Roseville Transit, Placer County Transit, Auburn Transit, and Lincoln Transit collaborate to have one phone number as a resource for area transit information, Dial-A-Ride reservations, and trip planning assistance. Passengers can call 745-7560 or e-mail sptransitinfo@roseville.ca.us for South Placer Transit Information.
    • Roseville Transit began using electronic passes for bus fares
  • 2012:
    • Bus Tracker tool added to the website, allowing passengers to see the real-time location of buses
    • Roseville Transit begins displaying commercial advertising on bus exteriors, with revenue going toward continuing to improve public bus services
    • Route M is extended to serve more areas of west Roseville, including the West Park neighborhood.
  • 2013:
    • A how-to video is released, showing new or inexperienced riders how to use local public transportation in the south Placer area, including Roseville Transit.
