Inspired by the rise in childhood obesity and the increase in traffic congestion around schools, organizers hope Walking School Bus Day encourages parents to walk with students more often. To combat the common fear that walking to school isn’t safe, City of Roseville traffic engineers helped school officials designate safe routes for the students to use when traveling to school. “Having parents and kids walk to school on one particular day gave them a chance to recognize that they have many friends and neighbors living close by so they can walk together in the future,” explained Cervantes.“ City of Roseville staff establishes safe walking routes for all schools within city limits. “It’s a domino effect” noted Cervantes. “When more people are walking there are less cars on the road, which makes walking more attractive.” Questions about Walking School Bus Days can be directed to: Shelby Renfeld and Lance Pagel Safe Routes to School Coordinators City of Roseville Public Works - Engineering (916) 746-1300 srenfeld@roseville.ca.us lpagel@roseville.ca.us |
