For Students & Teachers
Bring Your Class to the Maidu Museum & Historic Site
Take your class on a field trip they will remember for years to come. The Maidu Museum & Historic Site offers guided tours of the museum and guided trail tours of the historic site which meet History and Social Science Content Standards section 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2 and 5.2 for the state of California. Our standard school programs are designed for Grades 3-6.
We also offer special 1 hour combo tours for Preschool-Grade 2 and special needs groups.
Guides lead students through the museum as they learn about Nisenan Maidu culture by participating in various activity stations and viewing California Indian artifacts and exhibits. Students will learn a Nisenan song with clapper sticks; play a Nisenan Stave game, make a beaded bracelet, and hear native stories.
Guides lead students through the historic site as they learn about the Maidu relationship to the natural world and experience an ancient village site. Students can view petroglyphs over 5,000 years old; over 400 bedrock mortars; and many native plants and animals. Students will watch how to grind acorns, touch a prehistoric native plant and try ochre face painting.
