Permanent Building Update

Please join us in our new museum with a new name!
Now open: Maidu Museum & Historic Site

In 2001, the Maidu Interpretive Center opened in a temporary modular building, and since then, Parks & Recreation staff has been aggressively seeking grants to fund construction of the permanent museum building. Nearly $2 million in grants have been raised to date. These grants funds were matched by the City Wide Park Fund and the Public Facilities Fund, which are funded through developer impact fees tied to commercial and residential construction.

The new center’s design is inspired by a Native American round house. The new exhibits in the permanent building are being funded through a $150,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The new exhibits emphasize native families and traditions. New permanent exhibit topics will include:

Orientation: Provides guides for viewing museum exhibits from a number of different cultural perspectives
Enduring Way of Life: Explores the lives and enduring traditions of native people
Taken From Their Families: Exposes the California Indian Boarding School experience
Networks of Trade: Examines trade goods and trade routes between native California tribes
Removed from their Homeland: Documents the forced relocation of the Maidu and other tribes from their traditional homes
Language Comes from the Land: Explores language differences among Maidu groups
When Worlds Collide: Shows how significant events in California history (i.e.The Gold Rush) affected native people
Roundhouse Traditions: Honors the sacred functions of the Roundhouse
We Are California Indian People: Provides native California seasonal ceremonies and events
Animal and Plant People: Showcases examples of animals and plants of the region

You may be wondering, during these tough economic times, how can the City afford to build a new facility such as this? This project is possible because of wise investments made during better economic times. The Maidu Museum's permanent building is not funded through the City’s General Fund, nor will it generate new, ongoing operating costs to the City. Only existing City resources and staff will be used to operate the facility.

For questions about the new Maidu Museum permanent building, to inquire about becoming a volunteer or serving on our Exhibit Development Team, please contact the center at (916) 774-5934.
