Urban Cycling: On-the-road focus
Saturday, May 25 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Maidu Community Center
This class is a compressed version of the League of American Bicyclists' Traffic Safety Course. Together with a follow-on one-hour session on maintenance, it covers the requirements for the League's first traffic safety course.
Students will be more confident and comfortable driving a bicycle on the streets with practice and small-group instruction. This one-day session covers how to develop safe and practical cycling in and around other traffic on roadways. Get where you want to go and have fun doing it.
The session also includes on-the-bike skills building on a controlled course, guided by instructors. We cover what to check before you ride, rules of the road, reasons for crashes, and how to avoid them. In a parking lot, we practice handling skills and emergency avoidance maneuvers. On the street, we practice lane positioning, how to bicycle through intersections, communicating with motorists, and bicycling safely and predictably.
If you complete the Saturday class, the follow-on one-hour session on bike maintenance, and the exam, you earn the Traffic Skills 101 certificate from the League of American Bicyclists.
All classes are taught by League-certified instructors Chris Ewers and David Allen.
This class includes a student manual. Class size is limited to 15 students, so please register in advance by contacting Chris.
