What's a database (and why should I use one)?

A database is a collection of resources, such as magazine, journal and newspaper articles, census records, pamphlets, and more that you can search from a computer. Some databases even have entire books! Most databases provide a combination of summaries and the entire article (full-text).

Why would I want to use these?

Have you ever needed information and someone else had already borrowed the book? Have you found yourself spending time searching on the Internet and trying to decide which information was accurate and current?
The articles in the information databases are:

  • accurate
  • objective
  • current
  • reliable
  • easy and quick to find
  • covering a variety of subjects such as medical information, genealogy, consumer help: it’s all there!

Database Technical Help

Check Internet Security Software Settings

Firewalls and security software sometimes block our online catalog and databases. If you use Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, or Norton Antivirus, you should check Brower Privacy and Cookie Blocking.

Check Your Browser Settings

Popup blockers can interfere with databases, causing it to seem like nothing is happening when you click on a link. Look for a bar or some other signal on your brower that indicates popups have been blocked. Usually, you can elect to allow popups from specific sites.  Try enabling JavaScript.

Try Another Browser

If you having problems, try downloading a different browser.  Popular alternative browsers include Google Chrome or FireFox, try downloading one of them instead. These are free to dowload. Note: By clicking link to Chrome or FireFox, you will be leaving The City of Roseville web site.

PowerSearch only searches OneFile and the PowerPacks, both Gale products . PowerSearch does not search the Health & Wellness Resource Center or any other databases we subscribe to.
