THE POSITION
The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the temporary position of Plant and Equipment Maintenance Worker I. This position will work at both the Dry Creek and Pleasant Grove Wastewater Treatment Plants. The normal work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30PM. This is a 1000 Hour temporary position that will be limited to 25 hours per week.

DEFINITION
To perform a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater treatment plants and related system facilities and equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the Plant and Equipment Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. The Plant and Equipment Maintenance Worker I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from an assigned supervisor; and technical and functional supervision from a Senior Plant and Equipment Mechanic.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES – Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Inspect and perform routine maintenance on machinery and equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, engines, compressors, and generators.

• Lubricate equipment and take oil samples for review and analysis.

• Perform routine building maintenance duties such as cleaning and painting of utility facilities and upkeep of work areas.

• Assist in construction and repair of tanks and pump houses and other special projects, working from blue prints and sketches.

• Dig trenches, install shoring, set up concrete forms as necessary, and backfill open trenches, completing surfaces “to-finish” as appropriate.

• Follow lock out/tag out procedures before engaging in work, especially in confined space areas; make notes regarding readings and findings of work.

• Operate and perform routine maintenance on a variety of heavy tools and equipment, and small hand and power tools used in the work.

• May use a computer to enter and retrieve information related to work assignments, record-keeping and timekeeping.

• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Uses and purposes of tools and equipment used in general construction and mechanical equipment maintenance and repair; safe work practices.

Ability to:

• Learn to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of utility construction and maintenance activities.

• Work in small confined spaces and at heights exceeding thirty feet.

• On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules. Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain jobs to others.
 
• Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing installation of equipment; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.

• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

• Be on-call evenings or week-ends; work unusual/prolonged work schedules during emergencies or seasonally-caused circumstances.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training

Experience:

• No experience is required; some general maintenance, and/or construction experience is preferred.

Training:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

SELECTION PROCESS
