Leonard M. "Duke" Davis, a native and lifelong Roseville resident, graduated from Roseville High School in 1944. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, he resumed his education, graduating from Sacramento State College in 1951. He received his Master's Degree and General Secondary Credential from that institution in 1952, and began a teaching career that spanned 41 years at the junior high, senior high and community college level. He taught and counseled nineteen years in the Grant Union High School District in Sacramento. Mr. Davis taught U.S. and California history at Consumnes River and American River Colleges for the past eleven years and retired from American River College in 1993.
He has authored several works on Placer and El Dorado Counties including: From Trail to Rail (1964) and Roseville Yesterday and Today (1975), both dealing with the history and development of Roseville; Dry Diggings on the North Fork (1975), a history of Auburn between 1848 and 1852; Greenwood, A Town That History Almost Forgot (1973); Tall Tales of the El Dorado, Some True, Some Not So True (1975); Georgetown, Pride of the Mountains (1976), all concerned with the famed Georgetown Divide area of El Dorado County. His most recent works are Roseville's Old Town (1979), Rocklin, Past, Present and Future (1981), and The Story of Roseville, California: Milestones & Memories (2002). Mr. Davis has also authored numerous historical articles for magazines and area newspapers.
