Water Warriors Program Students will:
Explore how water travels across our blue planet and discover ways to keep our watersheds clean from outside your own back door. Students will take a journey on the path of a water droplet to discover how water moves and cycles through our watersheds. Also, students will become a “piece” of the watershed to see how everything is connected.
- Describe how much fresh water is available on Earth for us to use and drink
- Define watershed; and what it means to them (local watershed)
- Identify what water pollution is and how it spreads through the watershed
- Identify at least 2 ways water can easily be polluted in their own home
- Plan 2 ways they will help to keep water safe and clean

1) Create your own water cycle – in a wide mouth jar (with lid) layer an inch of small rocks at the very bottom, followed by an inch of sand. Place a bottle cap with water and place it on top of sand layer, add a small plant and put the lid on jar. Place jar in a sunny place and discover how the water cycle works? Can you see each stage of the water cycle in action? Illustrate your observation demonstrating the water cycle.
2) What happens if a pollutant gets into our water source? Find out with this simple experiment. Fill a glass container with tap water. Add a few drops of red food coloring. Observe how the food coloring spreads through the water. (real pollution in body of water would have the same effect) Slice off the bottom of a freshly washed celery stalk with its leaves and place into the colored water. Let it sit for 3-4 hours or overnight. Cut bottom end of stalk again. Repeat a few times. What did you observe each time as you made several cuts off the bottom. This is how it would occur in nature when a pollutant enters a water source.
3) Where did you travel as a water droplet? Using the bracelet you made during your visit to Roseville Utility Exploration Center, write or illustrate your travels as a water droplet moving from place to place. Where did you go? Did you stay put in one place for long? How is it that you could move from clouds to the lake? (water does not sit in one place- it is constantly moving via the water cycle).
