2012 Water Supply Outlook

May Update:

Roseville water is supplied from two primary sources, surface water from Folsom Reservoir treated at a City owned and operated water treatment plant and from Groundwater wells located within the City water service area.  Groundwater is used in time of drought to provide water reliability to the City, primary supply is surface water from Folsom.

Water availability of surface water is highly dependent on winter rains and mountain snowpack.  In the Mediterranean climate of Roseville nearly all precipitation is received between November and May with most occurring in January through March.  It is during this time that Roseville will determine water allocations available for the dry summer months.  Water condition summaries can be found at: http://www.usbr.gov/mp/PA/water/index.html

This year has been an interesting and challenging one in regards to water projections.  Fall 2011 started the year with considerable reservoir carryover storage from an above normal precipitation and snowpack from the previous year.  This trend did not, however, continue and 2012 started with dry conditions approaching the driest on record.  Precipitation event in March and April of 2012 did help considerably but precipitation and snowpack is still below normal with little to none expected from this point forward.  The precipitation events did allow an adjustment of the water available with Roseville scheduled to receive our full allocations of contract water.

Water use for the year is projected in February and compared to available supplies.  The following is a summary of March 2012 through February 2013 projections in Acre-ft:
