Conservation Tips

The city is encouraging its customers to take actions now to reduce their water use, such as:

  • Reviewing irrigation schedules and reducing run times;
  • Watering with weather conditions in mind;
  • Check homes for leaks in irrigation, toilets and other water using fixtures;
  • Retrofitting faucets and showerheads with water saving aerators and other devices;
  • Covering swimming pools to reduce evaporation during hot weather;
  • Taking advantage of free city programs like Water Wise House Calls, free water saving devices, and rebates from the City of Roseville

"We are encouraging our customers to call us as we can help them find ways to save water," said Whitehead.  "In many cases, saving 20 percent is fairly easy to do and we are here to help our customers achieve that goal."

How can I start saving water?

- Participate in our many free water saving programs or generous rebates. Click here for more information on how to get started.

- Reducing your water consumption by ten percent is relatively easy to accomplish. Here are a few recommended first steps to save water:

In the summer, irrigation is the greatest water user.

Water early in the morning to minimize evaporation during the hottest parts of the day.

Water less frequently for a longer period of time. Deep watering directs the water to the roots, but watch to ensure excess water is not draining to the gutter. Know your soil type – clay soils don’t absorb water quickly and tend to shed water in a shorter period of time.

Don’t water again until the top inch of soil is relatively dry.

Adjust your irrigation timer to water with the weather. Cooler weather requires less water for your landscape. Even in the hot summer months, 3 days a week is sufficient for established landscapes

Use mulch around the base of plants to retain soil moisture.

Replace your lawn with a water conserving plants (Roseville is buying back your lawn for $1/square foot to help cover the cost of converting to water wise landscapes). Click here for more information.

Switch from conventional sprinklers to a drip system to direct the water to the roots of plants.

Wash your car at the carwash as most are designed to recycle its water.

Switch out high-use toilets for new 1.28 gpf (gallons per flush) models – rebates available, click here for more information.

Cover your pool to reduce evaporation – rebates available, click here for more information.

Request a Water Wise House Call by Roseville Water Specialists. They will evaluate your home for water leaks and inefficiencies and recommend the best irrigation practices for your landscape.

Check your house for leaks and fix all that you find. Remember to check your toilets, faucets, outdoor spigots, and irrigation systems.

Only do full loads of laundry and don’t let the water run while doing dishes, brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your hands.

Shave a minute or two off your showers and only operate your dishwasher when its full. Consider high-efficiency appliances and fixtures if your’s are in need of replacement.
