LivingWise: Making Good Choices and Using Resources Wisely!

During the 2010-11 school year 575 sixth grade students and their families participated in an energy and water saving program funded by Roseville Electric and Environmental Utilities. 

The LivingWise Program, a fully implemented, multi-resource efficiency/education program designed to encourage installation of efficiency measures in homes and build knowledge of environmental issues which was requested and implemented by teachers at Crestmont Elementary School, Buljan Intermediate School, Silverado Middle School, St. Albans Country Day School, St. Rose School and Stoneridge Elementary School.

The program results in many measurable energy and water savings using the best messengers - students!  The program delivered a proven blend of teacher-designed classroom activities with hands-on home projects to install high efficiency devices and introduce resource-conscious behavior to families through the students. Sixty one percent of the participants said they changed teh way they used energy and 52 percnet said they changed the way they used water. The estimated annual savings for every home is 3,194 gallons of water and waste water, 6 therms of gas and 150 kWh of power.

The energy efficiency and water conservation kits provided to the students will result in a reduction of water and energy many years after they are installed. The projected annual savings for each home that participates is estimated to be 1,533,487,000 gallons of water and waste water; 71,911 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, and 2,900 therms of gas.  Over the 10 years, the anticipated savings is 1,290,763,600 gallons of water and waste water; 666,614 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, and 25,568 therms of natural gas.
